96% of Drivers Witness Road Rage — Know Your Rights if You’re a Victim

Every day, millions of people get behind the wheel, putting themselves and others at risk due to road rage and aggressive driving. Despite advances in vehicle safety, driving remains one of the most dangerous activities, largely due to how drivers behave behind the wheel. Aggressive driving and road rage behaviors make our roads far less safe, and each driver's choice matters when it comes to preventing serious and fatal car accidents.

A recent study by The Zebra reveals that over half of drivers witness dangerous behavior like red-light running and tailgating. Almost everyone in the survey, 96%, reported seeing at least one form of aggressive driving. Only 66% admitted to having engaged in such behaviors. While many see aggression on the road, fewer seem willing to acknowledge their role in it.

What aggressive driving behaviors are most common?

In the study, survey respondents shared their experiences with road rage and aggressive driving behaviors, both witnessed and personally experienced over the past six months. The data reveal the prevalence of aggressive actions on the road and the gap between what drivers witness and what they admit to doing themselves.

According to the survey, drivers witnessed a variety of aggressive driving behaviors:

  • 51.84% of drivers reported seeing other drivers run red lights or stop signs.
  • 51.23% witnessed weaving in and out of traffic.
  • 49.02% witnessed tailgating.
  • 47.42% observed drivers cutting off others.

When it comes to behaviors drivers have personally experienced:

  • 44.97% reported being tailgated.
  • 43.78% of respondents had been cut off.
  • 33.73% experienced drivers passing where prohibited.
  • 31.75% of respondents admitted to honking out of anger.

Does age influence road rage?

The study also broke down road rage behaviors by age group, revealing some generational trends in driving behavior. Here are the most commonly witnessed acts of aggression by each generation:

  • Gen Z: Tailgating was most frequently observed.
  • Millennials: Running red lights topped the list.
  • Gen X and Boomers: Weaving in and out of traffic was a common sight.

When it came to their own experiences, Gen Z and Millennials were more likely to report being cut off, while older drivers often felt they were tailgated. Despite these differences, honking out of anger was the most commonly admitted behavior across all age groups. Older generations were more likely to report seeing aggressive behavior than engaging in it.

What are drivers' biggest safety concerns?

Though road rage can be terrifying, drivers don't see it as the most dangerous behavior on the road. In The Zebra's study, distracted driving ranked as the biggest concern, with 30% of respondents listing it as their top safety threat. Speeding and reckless driving came in second, while only 14% considered road rage the greatest risk. Even so, road rage remains a significant issue, with nearly 13% of drivers experiencing life-threatening actions in just six months.

How can you avoid road rage?

While it's easy to focus on other drivers' behavior, one of the most effective ways to stay safe is to monitor your own actions. Here are a few simple strategies for avoiding road rage:

  • Stay calm in traffic: Avoid tailgating, honking, or making gestures at other drivers.
  • Give yourself extra time: Leaving early can reduce stress and prevent aggressive driving.
  • Ignore aggressive drivers: If another driver is acting erratically, stay clear and avoid engaging.
  • Practice safe habits: Don't rush through yellow lights or cut off other drivers.
  • Report extreme behavior: If someone is putting others in danger, safely report it to authorities.
